Fuel Surcharges Hit Melbourne Cafes
Fuel Surcharges Hit Melbourne Cafes

Just when we thought we’d seen every type of surcharge imaginable - public holidays, weekends, and card fees (hopefully on its way out) - a new one has entered the chat: the fuel surcharge.

It might sound like something you’d see on a freight bill or airline ticket, but the “fuel surcharge” has officially landed on our restaurant menus.

Why is this happening?

According to a recent report by news.com.au hospitality businesses are being urged to consider adding a 5% fuel surcharge to help offset the massive spike in supply chain costs. If you are not living under a rock, you would have seen Trump’s Iran War happening in the Strait of Hormuz which had global ramification.

Spotted in the wild: Primary @ Pioneers Park

The first local instance I have come across is at Primary @ Pioneers Park in Berwick. An eagle-eyed diner shared a photo on Reddit showing a small “Temporary fuel surcharge 1%” sticker added to the bottom of their menu.

It’s a modest amount compare to the 5% being floated by industry groups, but it’s a sign of the times. For many Melburnians, it’s the first time seeing this specific line item on a bill for a morning coffee or brunch.

Transparency is key

Whether you’re happy to chip in a little extra or you’re feeling the surcharge fatigue, transparency is important - noone likes a surprise when the EFTPOs machine is handed over.

That’s why I have officially started tracking fuel surcharge at surcharge.com.au. You will now be shown an option to report a surcharge if you see one in the wild.
